HOW TO SET THE TABLE

Setting a table may seem simple, but knowing where to place the glasses, which utensils to use, and how to choose decorations can be confusing. We're here to guide you through creating both a formal and a casual table settings with the right techniques and style.

CREATE A FORMAL TABLE SETTING

A formal table setting is a meticulously arranged layout of tableware, typically reserved for special occasions or formal events. It includes a specific placement of plates, utensils, glassware, and napkins, often following traditional etiquette guidelines. This setting aims to create an elegant and sophisticated dining experience.

01

Place plates in front of the chair backs, about a hand's length from the edge of the table.

02

Arrange utensils in order from the outside in: knife to the right with the blades facing the plate, spoon to the right of the knife, fork to the left with tines facing upwards. Ensure utensils are shiny and clean, avoiding fingerprints and stains.

03

Position the napkin either to the left of the plate or on top of the plate.

04

Place glasses above the knife and spoon, in order from right to left: water, white wine, red wine.

05

Keep table decorations simple and elegant, such as a floral arrangement in the center of the table.

06

Serve bread on a small plate or in a breadbasket placed to the left above the plates.

CREATE A CASUAL TABLE SETTING

A casual table setting is a simpler and more relaxed arrangement of tableware, typically suitable for everyday meals and informal occasions. It may involve basic placement of plates, utensils, and glasses, with an emphasis on comfort rather than formality. It's common to decorate the table in a more relaxed manner and without strict rules for accessory placement.

01

Place plates opposite each chair back, aligning them with the edge of the table.

02

Place the utensils beside the plates in the order they will be used: knife to the right with the blade facing the plate, spoon to the right of the knife, fork to the left with tines facing upward.

03

Position the napkins beside the plates to the left or in the center of each plate.

04

Arrange the glasses above the plates to the right, in the order of use from right to left: water, optionally other beverages.

05

Keep table decorations minimal or entirely absent. If serving bread, place it on a small plate or in a bread basket placed to the left of the plates or in the center of the table.
